We have a strong education programme focusing on the needs of undergraduate students, registrars, general practitioners, orthopaedic surgeons and allied health professionals.
Undergraduate medical teaching in our department is a four week term, popular with the fourth year students. It is a programme of intensive and structured teaching conducted by the consultants and registrars.
Postgraduate and registrar education is organised around the 7am meetings
held by our subspeciality services. Regular combined meetings are held with rheumatology,
oncology, imaging and pathology. Thursday morning Grand Rounds feature local
and international speakers and interesting clinical cases. Acquisition of skills
is an important component of training. For this reason, we spend a lot ot time
teaching our interns how to splint and plaster. The
well
known registrar skill sessions are a forum for our future orthopods to learn
intricate
surgical techniques.
Our orthopaedic registrar rotations include exchange programmes with Albury Hospital and the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York. We also have training positions for sports medicine and shoulder surgery, hand surgery and microsurgery, and orthopaedic trauma.
In order to advance the training of orthopaedic surgeons, we regularly organise international meetings.
Also, since musculoskeletal disorders form up to 20% of the practice of a family
physician, we contribute to continuing medical education programmes for our
general practitioner colleagues. These are held in alternate months and are
RACGP-accredited.
